Encapsulation
Encapsulation serves as a protection to flat paper
materials. After preserving a document through
cleaning and de-acidification, it is best to give
it a good home to prevent any further deterioration.
For items such as letters, maps, and posters I
will either fully encapsulate a document in clear
archival Mylar, or in a custom L-style Mylar folder.
This allows the document to be handled without
transferring harmful oils from your skin that
could aid in further damage, as well as creating
a micro-climate for the document. Just like a
clamshell box for a book, a document can be removed
at any time from it’s custom encapsulation.
"The man who does not
read good books has no advantage over the man
who cannot read them." -Mark Twain |
